I recently reposted a video, Intel shows off Thunderbolt 80 Gbps, that was taken during the #IntelTechTour, from Dr. Ian Cutress, which got me thinking about my journey with Thunderbolt. In 2010, Thunderbolt combined high-speed data and video onto a single connector with a total bandwidth of 10Gb/s and we thought that was blazing fast. We heard from some customers that 10Gb/s was not necessary and who would use it? With video and data increasing and everyone becoming a creator, we now know that was not fast enough. A dozen years later, and we are now at 40Gb/s.

CES 2018 was a great showcase for many exciting new Thunderbolt™ 3 based products.  During the event there were more than 15 new PCs and more than 30 new peripherals launched.  There were new Notebook and Desktop PC designs announced and a variety of peripheral types including Displays, Storage, Docks, External Graphics, and more which clearly showcased the significant growth of the Thunderbolt 3 ecosystem.

Making summer 2017 even more enjoyable, the Thunderbolt™ 3 ecosystem continues to grow significantly with many new Hosts and Devices being announced. Thunderbolt 3 also received good press coverage in the first half of the year, including our plans to integrate Thunderbolt 3 into future Intel CPUs and to provide the protocol specification to the industry. Additionally Microsoft announced enhanced support for Thunderbolt 3 device plug-and-play and Apple announced future support for external graphics.
